[PC Game Pass] Controller Enabled = Off, controller prompts when game launches, can't use M+K

Playing via PC Game Pass, I have the setting Controller Enabled = Off because I have a controller plugged in for other games, but I want to use Mouse + Keyboard for this game.

When I launch the game it frequently shows controller prompts, "Press A to continue" and after the Game Pass popup window, the main menu also has controller prompts.

If I continue my game that way it does not recognize Mouse + Keyboard inputs.

I have to restart the game, usually once or twice, to get a launch that allows me to use Mouse + Keyboard.

I could solve this issue by unplugging my controller but I'd rather not since it's annoying to have to plug/unplug it every time I play a different game.

Hi nothingpants,

Sorry to hear your are having trouble with a connected controller.

This is a known issue and we are hoping to resolve it as fast as possible. Leaving the controller unplugged is the only way around the issue for now.

Thanks for your patience,

Chizel

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem now. I can see that original post is 7 months old right now.
Have you resolved it somehow? Is there any workaround?
Because bug still exists on 04 June 2023.

One more question to someone from dev team:
Since this is a known bug, where can I track it to know that is has been fixed? Do you have such backlog available for players?

Hi Xadrez,

Sorry to hear you have experienced this bug.

I have looked through our records and found that it was listed as fixed when we released our 4.0 update.

I will ask the team to check again, but is there any chance you can grab a clip of the issue taking place? You can send it to me via campus.support@twopointstudios.com.

Thanks,

Chizel

I'm also having this issue, however I'm playing from Steam rather than game pass, and rather than a real X-Box controller, I have a Razer Huntsman Analogue Keyboard.

In my case, the Razer Keyboard drivers present the keyboard to windows as both a keyboard, an xbox controller and a joystick and their software allows you to map keys to controller/joystick axes and buttons. This means I can't unplug the controller without unplugging the keyboard.

My game version is 10.1.138699+2023-12-06.2232

I'd estimate the problem occurs about 1 in 4 times the game is launch and it works okay 3 in 4.

Heya, you may have already tried these steps but looking into how that keyboard interacts with other titles I can see some players have found workarounds by:

- "Disabling Xbox 360 Controller for Windows in device manager, when clicking on the entry it should be called "RazerHX Xbox Controller"
- If that doesn't work, go to "Human Interface Devices" and disable "HID-compliant game controller"

The steps for this are:

  1. Go to Control Panel

  2. Devices and Printers

  3. Double-click on "Razer Huntsman V2 Analog"

  4. Go to the Hardware tab

  5. Double-click on "HID-compliant game controller"

  6. Click on "Change settings"

  7. Go to the "Driver Tab"

  8. Click on "Disable Device"

This disables the in-game controller from the keyboard (i.e. WASD acting like a joystick) so if this is a feature you use elsewhere you will need to re-enable it, sorry for the inconvenience!

Some players also suggested checking your bindings in Razer's software (Synapse?) as if any of your keys are bound as controller keys in software that may trigger an application to read the keyboard as a controller.

It looks like this issue may present in a number of other titles as well, I'll raise this with the team to see if there's any way we can investigate stopping it from happening on our side or if it is an issue with this specific peripheral.

Thanks for checking. Although I can disable the controller that way, it is probably more effort than restarting the game until it works okay given it works more often than it fails.

I have no keys bound to the controller in synapse for the profile I'm using for this game. However, even if I did, the presence of the controller should not stop the mouse/keyboard working in the game. The drivers permanently present the device as both a keyboard and separately as a controller - binding keys to controller functions doesn't stop the drivers also presenting it as a keyboard.

The game shouldn't be able to (or need to) tell that the controller and keyboard are really the same hardware device. If the game detects a mouse, keyboard and controller, all 3 should work as input devices in the main menu.

I've also given feedback in synapse asking them to provide an option to disable the controller/joystick when in specific keyboard profiles.

Finally, if it helps, Two Point Hospital doesn't have this issue.
